ENGLISH AS A WORLD LANGUAGE

INTRODUCTION

Now a days English is known as the ' LINGUA FRANCA ' of the world. It is the global language among all the languages of Indo-European language family. English is a vibrant and international language with twenty percent of the world's population speaking English as native, second or foreign language. In addition to its status as a mother tongue in many countries, global use of English is growing for communication among speakers of other languages in places where English is not the majority language. Here we will see some reasons why English is the world language.

1. Language of Business :

              English is considered as the language of business and finance. Nowadays the global economy is more consolidated than ever, large corporations have established themselves all stock, commodity and currency markets are so closely tied up that even the tiniest changes in an important stock price will have an immediate effect on other prices worldwide.

2. Abundance of Literature :

                The history of English literature is well-known to us all. Many legendary personages have contributed their grandiose and magnificent works in the field of English 
 FOR EXAMPLE... 

 i)  Chaucer's - ' Prologue to the Canterbury          Tales'
                        - ' Canterbury Tales'
ii) Shakespeare's - ' Hamlet' , ' Macbeth' ,' Othello' , ' King Lear '

iii)  John Dryden's criticism, Philip Sidney's poetries , Marlowe 's  Tragedies etc...

 This list is endless. But the prominent works of the renowned figures show the vastitude of English literature.


3.  Simplicity of Language :

                      ' simplicity ' this word indicates the characteristic of English Language. This language has some such features that make it different from other languages. Like , receptivity, Heterogeneousness, simplicity of inflection, growth of intonation... Such aspects serve variety in the food of English. Thus, we can find simplicity in this linguL Franca called, English.
            

4.  Political Reasons : 

                      There are some political reasons behind the popularity of English language. They lead us towards the history of English and Britain.  At that time queen Elizabeth ruled, she permitted people to go to foreign countries for business. During this time period ' BBC channel ' was telecast in radios. The purpose of these things was to make money and bring welfare of country. These were some political reasons that brought this language forward in light.



   CONCLUSION :


              If we talk about modern age, in this span English has become the major language for teaching and learning. In countries where English is not usually a native language, there are two distinct models for teaching English : Educational programs for students who want to move to English- speaking countries, and other programs for students who don't intend to move but want to understand English content for the purposes of education, entertainment, or conducting international business. Thus these five- six reasons like economy, politics, simplicity , Abundance of literature have made this language very famous among all the languages of the world.
